Abū-‘Ubayd, the servant of ‘Abdur-Raḥmān Ibn-‘Awf said, "I observed ‘Umar Ibnul-Khaṭṭāb, on the Day of Sacrifice (1) start with the prayer, and then give the sermon. He then said, 'I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, forbid fasting on two days: the Day of Breaking the Fast (2), when you end your [Ramaḍān] fast and which is a feast for Muslims, and the Day of Sacrifice, when you should eat from the meat of your sacrifice.'" Footnotes: (1) (‘Īd al-Aḍ-ḥā) A Muslim holiday that falls on the 10th day of the month of Thul Hijjah to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. It also marks the end of the pilgrimage season. Muslims, who can afford it, sacrifice from their best domestic animals and feed the poor. (2) (‘Īd al-Fitr) A Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramaḍān, the month of fasting. Click on ḥadīth to read more
